India vs West Indies 1st T20I result, Shreyas Iyer century in Lucknow

India have taken a 1-0 lead in the five-match T20I series against West Indies, and they did it in style. At the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Tuesday night, Shreyas Iyer hit an unbeaten 102 off 43 balls as India chased 172 with 32 balls to spare, winning by eight wickets.

It was a captain's night from start to finish. Iyer won the toss, chose to bowl, watched his bowlers dismiss West Indies for 171, and then finished the job himself.

India vs West Indies 1st T20I: the scores

  • West Indies 171 all out in 19.1 overs: Sherfane Rutherford 56 (34), Shai Hope 52 (37)
  • India 172/2 in 14.4 overs: Shreyas Iyer 102* (43), Ishan Kishan 37* (27), Abhishek Sharma 21 (10)
  • Result: India won by 8 wickets with 32 balls remaining
  • India's best bowlers: Naman Dhir 3/31, Axar Patel 2/26, Kuldeep Yadav 2/33

Shreyas Iyer's unbeaten hundred

When Iyer walked in, India were 35 for 2 in the fourth over. Abhishek Sharma had raced to 21 off 10 balls before he was caught by Shimron Hetmyer off Roston Chase, and Sanju Samson was caught and bowled by Akeal Hosein for 11.

What followed was one of the cleanest chases you will see. Iyer hit 10 fours and six sixes in his 43-ball innings, taking on the West Indies spinners and quicks alike. He never let the required rate creep up, and once he got going the target started to look small.

Ishan Kishan was the perfect partner. He made an unbeaten 37 off 27 balls, rotating the strike and picking off boundaries while Iyer did the heavy hitting. The pair added an unbroken 137 for the third wicket, and Iyer brought up his hundred as India finished the game in the 15th over.

West Indies had no answer. Matthew Forde went for 39 in two overs, and every West Indies bowler went at more than nine an over.

The bowlers set it up

The chase was easy because India's bowlers had done the hard work first.

West Indies started quickly, but Arshdeep Singh bowled Kamil Pooran in the fifth over, and in the space of eight balls they went from 38 for 0 to 44 for 3. Hetmyer was run out by Iyer and Samson, and Axar Patel bowled Rovman Powell for a duck.

Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford rebuilt with a stand of 63, and at 107 for 3 after 11.4 overs West Indies were set for something close to 200. Then debutant Naman Dhir changed the game.

Naman Dhir's dream debut

Handed his T20I cap by Arshdeep before the game, Dhir got Hope caught by Axar for 52, and the collapse began. West Indies lost five wickets for 28 runs and slipped from 107 for 3 to 135 for 8. Kuldeep Yadav had Roston Chase lbw and Matthew Forde caught by Kishan, and Dhir picked up two more wickets to finish with 3 for 31 from his four overs.

Rutherford kept fighting and hit three sixes in his 56 off 34, dragging West Indies to 171. But Mayank Yadav got him caught by Dhir in the 19th over, and Axar wrapped up the innings in the 20th.

Axar and Kuldeep squeeze the middle overs

Axar Patel was the pick of the economy rates, with 2 for 26 including a maiden. Kuldeep's 2 for 33 kept the pressure on through the middle overs. Arshdeep (1/34) and Mayank (1/40) were more expensive, but the spinners and Dhir made sure West Indies never got away.

After the ODI series, where India conceded more than 1,000 runs in three games, this was a much sharper bowling performance.

What it means for the series

India lead 1-0 with four games to play. The second T20I is in Ranchi on Friday, 9 October, at 7 PM IST.

There is one talking point the win will not settle: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi sat out again, with Samson and Abhishek opening and Kishan at No. 3. With Iyer in this form and Kishan unbeaten, the management has even less reason to change the top order for Ranchi.
