  • India 406/2 in 43.3 overs: Shubman Gill 223* (133), Rohit Sharma 101 (75), Ruturaj Gaikwad 31*, Virat Kohli 29 (19)

Three West Indies hundreds

After India chose to bowl, West Indies batted like a side that wanted to bat India out of the series. John Campbell hit 101 off 68 balls with nine fours and five sixes, Shai Hope made 104 off 94, and Amir Jangoo smashed 114 off 77 with 13 fours and three sixes. It was the first time three West Indies batters had scored hundreds in the same ODI innings.

India's bowlers had a tough day. Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav and Gurnoor Brar took two wickets each, but India gave away 23 extras, 20 of them wides. Hope was also dropped by Virat Kohli at mid-wicket in his 40s and went on to make a hundred.

There was one high point in the field: Kuldeep Yadav removed Hope and Keemo Paul to reach 200 ODI wickets, only the fourth Indian spinner to get there after Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh and Ravindra Jadeja.

Shubman Gill's fastest ODI double hundred

India's captain then played the innings of his life. Gill reached 50 off 41 balls, 100 off 62 and 150 off 100, then brought up his double hundred off just 117 balls. That is the fastest double century in ODI history, beating Ishan Kishan's 126-ball record set against Bangladesh in 2022.

He finished unbeaten on 223 off 133 balls, with 26 fours and eight sixes. It was Gill's second ODI double hundred after his 208 against New Zealand in Hyderabad in 2023, making him only the second batter after Rohit Sharma to score more than one.

Rohit Sharma's hundred and 12,000 ODI runs

Rohit matched Gill blow for blow at the start. He made 101 off 75 balls with ten fours and six sixes, and passed 12,000 ODI runs during the innings. The pair put on a double-century opening stand that took the sting out of the chase before Jayden Seales trapped Rohit lbw. India reviewed, but ball-tracking showed the ball hitting middle stump.

Virat Kohli made a quick 29 off 19 balls before he was caught by Sherfane Rutherford off Shamar Joseph. Ruturaj Gaikwad (31 not out) then stayed with his captain to the finish.

Records from India's 406-run chase

  • India's 406/2 is the second-highest successful chase in ODI history, behind South Africa's 438/9 against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006.
  • India are only the second team ever to chase a 400-plus target in an ODI.
  • It is India's highest successful ODI chase, beating 362/1 against Australia in Jaipur in 2013.
  • Gill's 117-ball double century is the fastest in ODI history.
  • The two teams scored 811 runs in the match.
